Gyton Grantley

Hey Gyton, tell us a little about yourself?

My name is Gyton Grantley, I’m from Brisbane I moved to Sydney when I graduated from acting school in 2001 and I spent about 12 years there. When I got the role in House Husbands I moved to Melbourne and met my now wife, we had a baby and here we are.

I’m an actor and voice artist, I do a lot of radio & tv ads, narrate shows and that really got us through last year, I set up a home studio – any time you see a Subway commercial just know that it came out of my bedroom it was really surreal the first time I saw one. I thought ‘wow, that came out of my mouth into a mic in my bedroom and now it is coming out of a TV downstairs’.

How did you get into acting & was it always a passion of yours?

I studied acting at QUT (Queensland University of Technology) in Brisbane, it was fantastic – I had a really great time. It was important that I stayed in Brisbane, I don’t think I was ready to embark on the world at that age and then I graduated and moved to Sydney got an agent and started my acting journey auditioning and acting.

I did all the school plays, eisteddfods, drama although I was always wary of it as a career as it’s a fickle industry and its very hard to make a living. I decided to do an Arts degree when I finished school and I did all the subjects.

I remember sitting in a toilet at uni and someone had written above the toilet roll ‘arts degree dispenser’, I thought righto, I don’t think I’m interested in enough of these subjects, so I gave acting a go. I auditioned for QT got in and never looked back.

Have you got any exciting roles or projects coming up?

I have a few things I’m developing myself, putting my producer hat on. I can’t give anything away but I’m a keen baker (before COVID) there is a show I’m developing involving Birthday Cakes which is exciting & another supernatural drama that I’m writing with a friend.

Last year really encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone & explore other potential talents.

What’s the most memorable & exciting moment you have had within the industry?

Working with Kate Winslet in the Dress Maker. I think when I graduated from QT as a 20-year-old, if someone had told me you would be working alongside Kate Winslet, I would have slapped them in the face. To be able to share scenes with her, Judy Davis & Hugo Weaving as well as a whole bunch of brilliant actors is just incredible.

How would you describe your fashion sense?

Living in Brisbane I was more of a ‘Country Road’ type then moved to Sydney & lived in Bondi where I was more of an ‘Urban Surfy’ type but since moving to Melbourne, I’m more of a ‘Northern Suburb’ type.

What’s your go to shoe & what do you look for in a good shoe?

I’m a big boots fan although I also really like a canvas shoe. A low-cut canvas shoe with no sock in summer is a winner.

One pair of Wild Rhinos you are wearing this Winter?

I’m really into Sniper Tan & Chambers Cognac at the moment. I love a tan/brown boot.
