Where to Go This Weekend – And What Boots to Pack

Off-grid escapes worth packing the boots for.

Weekends are for getting out there — away from traffic, inboxes, and takeout routines. Whether it’s a solo reset or a weekend away with mates, there’s nothing better than paddocks, peaks, and pub fires. We’ve pulled together a few of our favourite rugged getaways across Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland — all within easy reach, but miles away from the usual. Let’s go.

Victoria – Forests, Peaks & Country Pubs

Grampians National Park

One for the hikers, rock scramblers and panoramic photo snappers. The Grampians deliver on every level — sunrise lookouts, hidden waterfalls, and bushwalks that get the boots working. Base yourself in Halls Gap, where you’ll find lowkey bush lodges and plenty of wildlife company. Pull on your leather lace-up boots and hit the trail.

Distance from Melbourne: 3 hours
Best for: Hiking, wild views, winter log fires

Warburton & the Yarra Ranges

Warburton is less touristy than the Dandenongs with towering trees, misty trails, and riverside strolls. You’ll find A-frame cabins tucked into the hills and the famous Redwood Forest just outside town. Chelsea Boots and a warm flannel will take you from the forest to brewery with ease.

Distance from Melbourne: 1.5 hours
Best for: Nature without crowds, misty mountain mornings

Daylesford & Hepburn Springs

Country luxe with a rugged edge. The tracks here are perfect for slow morning walks, followed by mineral spring dips and woodfired pizza in town. Stay in a farmhouse or vintage cottage, and take your time. Tan Leather Boots and a beanie are all you need.

Distance from Melbourne: 90 minutes
Best for: Slower weekends, pub fires, autumn walks

New South Wales – Bushwalks, Valleys & Countryside Calm

Kangaroo Valley

Lush, quiet, and made for those who want to go off-grid without going too far. With misty mornings, kayaking down the river, and trails through forested hills, Kangaroo Valley is a dream weekend out. Stay in a restored barn or tiny house and bring your Zip-Up Boots — you’ll want something sturdy for trail-to-town ease.

Distance from Sydney: 2 hours
Best for: Bushland beauty, river paddling, off-grid calm

Barrington Tops National Park

Looking for altitude? Barrington is wild, windy and way up high. A true adventurer’s getaway, with subalpine trails, ancient rainforest, and 4WD access tracks. Pack your chunky sole leather boots — this is not a thongs kind of trip.

Distance from Newcastle: 2.5 hours
Best for: Serious hikes, solitude, mountain air

Mudgee Wine Region

If you like your country with a side of shiraz, Mudgee hits the mark. Explore cellar doors, tuck into paddock-to-plate dining, and spend the night in a vineyard stay. The terrain may be relaxed, but your style doesn’t have to be — go for burnished leather lace-ups with casual chinos.

Distance from Sydney: 3.5 hours
Best for: Wine weekends, country drives, fireside chats

Queensland – Hinterland Trails & Cool-Climate Charm

Scenic Rim

It’s all in the name. Just outside Brisbane, this region is packed with rolling ranges, national parks, and retreats that let you properly switch off. Explore Mount Barney or Canungra trails by day, and sink into a campfire chair by night. Rugged boots with grip are your best mate here.

Distance from Brisbane: 1.5–2 hours
Best for: Mountain air, off-grid cabins, fresh perspective

Sunshine Coast Hinterland

Yes, there’s more to the Sunny Coast than beaches. Head inland to Maleny or Montville where you’ll find cool breezes, rainforest walks, and incredible views over the Glass House Mountains. Think laid-back luxury — lightweight boots, relaxed linen, and a long lunch with a view.

Distance from Brisbane: 1.5 hours
Best for: Rainforest walks, local markets, quiet charm

Stanthorpe & Granite Belt

High country Queensland? You bet. Stanthorpe offers cool climate vineyards, granite outcrops, and trails lined with golden autumn leaves. It’s as rugged as it is refined. Throw on your dark brown leather boots and a wool coat — this is red wine by the fire territory.

Distance from Brisbane: 3 hours
Best for: Wine and walks, highland getaways, winter style
